Review: Home Improvements for the Busy & Broke

home-improvement-projectsHome Improvement Projects for the Busy & Broke: How To Get Your $h!t Together and Live Like An Adult, is a book geared towards the young professional finally living in that first apartment or house. If you don’t mind the occasional swearing for emphasis, the text is entertaining and edgy. A writing style undoubtedly appealing to millennials who read sentences between texts and tweets. Chapters begin with the basics of how to live like an adult: Stop partying every night, get motivated, make your bed and clean your room. Advice my teenagers hear daily, usually at high volume. Apparently many kids don’t.

The Good: Initially the text seems adolescent but quickly graduates to practical, yet frugal design tips. Advice benefiting even responsible adults.  How to paint a room, replace cabinet hardware, swap kitchen faucets and even reupholster chairs are discussed in detail. Some step-by-step photo series are provided. Projects like how to hang artwork or drapes sound easy, but these tasks really aren’t that simple. With this book the reader will learn basic home maintenance and design practices.

The Bad: Perhaps this book’s downside is actually a critique of modern culture. Why don’t youngsters have a clue about adult life, or even a basic understanding of home maintenance? Parents these days aren’t raising kids with an eye towards adulthood. Instead they’re offspring are forced to learn life’s basics from books like this.

The Bottom Line: If your helicopter parent’s didn’t teach the basics of home life. Sadly, the majority of young (and not so young) adults today qualify. Then buy this book and learn how to grow up. Responsible adults will also find great tips for frugal home maintenance and design, just skip the first chapters.
